I know this is going to be considered sacrilege by so many of his adoring fans, but I’m still not sold on Jake Gyllenhaal as a leading man. I was one of the few that actually liked PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME, but even with that, I’m still not convinced he’s a Hollywood leading man. In his new film, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS, he plays a pharmaceutical salesman that enjoys the luxuries that come with being young, handsome and rich and although he enjoys his womanizing ways, he meets a beautiful free spirit (Anne Hathaway) that makes him question his life.
The film has a great supporting cast that includes Oliver Platt, Judy Greer, Hank Azaria, George Segal and Gabriel Macht. But maybe the most interesting thing about the film is that it’s directed by Edward Zwick, who hasn’t really directed a humorous (I’m reluctant to say rom-com) love story since his directorial debut, ABOUT LAST NIGHT… So it will be interesting to see what a couple of decades directing dramas has taught him about romance.
