Sacha Baron Cohen to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen, best known for his many alter ego shenanigans, will be playing the iconic lead singer for Queen, Freddie Mercury. Cohen definitely has the right look and build along with his fair amount of flamboyancy. But will he have the right dramatic chops and singing capability? I think he does have the talent but I don’t think his work on SWEENEY TODD will get him anywhere close to amazing range of Mercury. So it will be interesting to see how they handle the singing aspect.
Peter Morgan (FROST/NIXON, THE QUEEN) will write the script about the band with a 2011 production start date. A rights package has been set that includes many of the band’s famous tunes, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, Another One Bites The Dust and You’re My Best Friend. I think it’s safe to say the soundtrack is going to rock you.
