Steven Soderbergh is directing Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark and The Hunger Games on the second unit

As if THE HUNGER GAMES becoming a film (four films actually), then landing the current “It” girl Jennifer Lawrence and getting a quick theatrical release less than a year away wasn’t good enough – well, it just got better people. Turns out that Steven Soderbergh (who will be releasing CONTAGION and HAYWIRE soon) is helping his buddy Gary Ross (they worked together on PLEASANTVILLE back in the day) by directing the second unit on the film. Sure, second unit doesn’t sound glamorous but it’s very important for the overall tone of the film. I didn’t think this film could get me more excited, but it just did. With a veteran director who has given us so many excellent films and being known for pumping them out so quickly, I now have no worries that THE HUNGER GAMES will be better than I originally thought.
THE HUNGER GAMES will be directed by Gary Ross and will star: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Elizabeth Banks. It opens in theaters on March 23, 2012.
