Top ten Game of Thrones villains…so far

Roose Bolton in Game of Thrones

7. Roose Bolton – Father to Ramsay Snow, Roose is the traitor who turned on Rob Stark and the men of the North.  It was a “what’s best for me” type of play as he hopes to grow in power.  Roose is a savvy player, whose house flag is a flayed man.  A dark symbol when most other houses are represented by some sort of beast.  He is a dangerous player that we should keep an eye on.  It’s a struggling debate who is the worst person – son Ramsay who is the embodiment of evil or the father who fosters it?

Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones

6. Tywin Lannister – A brilliant and cold-hearted strategist in war, Tywin is the patriarch of the Lannister family. His motives are strictly to better his family and their position over the kingdom. He has no qualms about the ruthless acts it takes to achieve that victory, particularly through the use of “The Mountain” (see number 5).  The Lannister’s biggest problems have always been from their own doing, which in this case is the treatment of his youngest son Tyrion.  After buying Shae (a character who could also be a nominee for this list), the woman Tyrion loved (an action that Tywin had done before),  and  then sentencing Tyrion to death, Tywin meets his demise sitting on the chamber pot with an arrow through the heart by the hands of the son he was choosing to destroy.

The Mountain in Game of Thrones

5. Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane –  As a child he burned his little brother, Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, for playing with his toy.  As an adult he is a rapist and murderer.  Used as Cersei Lannister’s champion to fight Tyrion Lannister’s champion, Oberyn “The Viper” Martell in what might be the most gruesome scene to date, he confesses to raping and murdering Oberyn’s sister and her children right before crushing the charismatic Oberyn’s head in.  After being mostly dead, The Mountain appears to be resurrected Frankenstein style, to kill Cersei’s enemies in the new season.  I think about his character from time to time outside of the show and I get physically ill over his evil deeds.

Game of Thrones season 5

4. Cersei Lannister – “When you play the game of thrones, you either win or you die.” Cersei might be the most interesting person on this list as her motives to save her children could be perceived as a good thing and thus none of her actions are truly evil.  I would argue that her no remorse and failure to look at the bigger picture attributes to a callous heart. By attempting to protect the evil power and monstrous actions of others (Joffrey, The Mountain), she is the shows biggest accomplice.  She will stop at nothing to hide truths and discard those who she feels are unworthy, which is pretty  much everyone. She ignorantly and swiftly tries to rid herself of her brother Tyrion, Queen Margery and any other random person who she foolishly believes to be a threat to her children or power without logical evidence.  She would rather feed the dogs than help the poor.  She has no remorse or guilt to any of her wrongful ways that may have detrimental consequences to others. Even when she is labeled with “Shame,” she has no shame. Cersei is a survivor, so my ironclad helmets are off to her. Being a villain is all about perspective and from my angle she’s looking pretty bad and extremely dangerous to boot, but she is also a resilliant player within the Game of Thrones.
