Warner Bros will distribute The Hobbit

With all of MGM’s financial issues, they went ahead full force supporting Peter Jackson and his upcoming film THE HOBBIT.  They financed it but weren’t going to be able to distribute it, lucky for them Warner Bros. has come in to save the day. Warner Bros. has taken over international theatrical rights as well as video rights and will loan money to MGM to completely finance the two part film.  Um, I think Warner Bros. is getting a steal because they already owned domestic theatrical rights to the film, so this deal gives them, in a sense, world-wide domination over this chapter of Middle Earth. The only thing MGM gets to maintain is international television rights to the film, which I guess isn’t something to scoff over but overall it seems like a big blow.

THE HOBBIT: PART 1 is set for a theatrical release December 2012 and Part 2 will follow in December 2013.
