Weekend box office: A Wrinkle in Time challenges Black Panther

Although early estimates are giving the edge to BLACK PANTHER, it is possible that A WRINKLE IN TIME could overperform on Sunday to finally take down the king at the weekend box office. However, by now you should know not to bet against BLACK PANTHER and with A WRINKLE IN TIME not getting great word of mouth, chances are good Panther will reign supreme. As for A WRINKLE IN TIME, everyone agrees and respects how ambitious the project is, but it seems the film can’t find a more adult audience. The horror film STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT, which is doing decent for an unheralded horror film, coming in with nearly $10 million. The last new movie of the weekend is GRINGO, which has a star-studded cast but is just barely cracking the top ten. It seems audiences just aren’t in the mood for a dark comedy right now.

So the question still remains as to what movie is going to clearly knock BLACK PANTHER from the top spot and I don’t think we’ll find out next week. The biggest movie opening up is the TOMB RAIDER reboot and although it looks better than the Angelina Jolie movies, it still doesn’t look good enough to be the franchise starter the studio is hoping for. There are a couple of smaller films opening up, such as LOVE, SIMON and 7 DAYS IN ENTEBBE, neither of which will do much damage at the weekend box office. If BLACK PANTHER can manage more than $30 million, it shouldn’t have any trouble next week. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
