Weekend box office: Call of the Wild and Sonic are battling for the top spot

Although $26 million isn’t a huge opening at the weekend box office, I have to admit that I’m surprised THE CALL OF THE WILD is even pulling in that much.  Harrison Ford looked like he was fully into the film, but that CGI dog was off-putting.  However, that isn’t turning off audiences as the film is battling back and forth with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG for the number one spot.  Usually, the more family-friendly film will take the lead on Sunday, but since both films have the same general audience, we won’t know for sure until later on Monday.  The other new film of the week is BRAHMS: BOY 2, which is scraping past $6 million.

Next week is a slow week with the only notable release being THE INVISIBLE MAN.  The trailers give off an overly creepy vibe, but the film is a far cry from the Universal planned monster universe film we were supposed to get several years ago.  I’m not sure this iteration is going to be scary enough to bring in a large audience, but it’s always risky to bet against a horror film.  However, my guess is that either Sonic or Call will take the top spot again with THE INVISIBLE MAN finishing in the top three.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog $26.1m

2. The Call of the Wild $26m

3. Birds of Prey $7m

4. Brahms: Boy 2 $6.2m

5. Bad Boys For Life $5.8m

6. 1917 $4.5m

7. Fantasy Island $4.3m

8. Parasite $3.2m

9. Jumanji: The Next Level $3.2m

10. The Photograph $3m
