Weekend box office: Deadpool 2 knocks off Avengers: Infinity War

We all knew DEADPOOL 2 (click the link to read our review) was going to clean up at the weekend box office and finally knock AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR off the top spot.  The only question was what kind of records, if any, the film was going to break.  The big record for the film is the best single day opening total for an R-rated film, taking in $53 million and beating out IT’s $50 million.  The question when it comes to DEADPOOL’s R-rating is whether it’s specific to the Deadpool character or if fans just want to see some R-rated superhero films.  Surprisingly, studios haven’t been too keen on testing the theory out and I don’t see Disney stepping up to the challenge any time soon.  As well as DEADPOOL 2 did, BOOK CLUB managed to take in over $13 million, which is actually pretty impressive given it’s small targeted demographic.

The party won’t last too long for DEADPOOL 2 since next week sees the release of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.  For all the drama surrounding SOLO, it sounds like it turned out to be a fun film.  Solo won’t break any records, but it should easily clear $100 million next weekend, which will give it the top spot.  It’s going to be interesting to see how much DEADPOOL 2 makes over it’s lifetime run.  The original made $363 million and the sequel has almost half that already.  But the sequel is facing some really stiff competition.  Either way, there’s no reason to believe we won’t see a DEADPOOL 3 in the next couple of years or at least an X-FORCE movie.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Deadpool 2 $132.1m

2. Avengers: Infinity War $28.2m

3. Book Club $13.4m

4. Life of the Party $7.6m

5. Breaking In $6.5m

6. Show Dogs $5.3m

7. Overboard $4.6m

8. A Quiet Place $3.8m

9. Rampage $1.4m

10. RBG $1.2m
