Weekend box office: Incredibles 2 lives up to expectations

Disney is having one heck of a year and that’s even with a disappointing Star Wars opening.  After the rousing success of BLACK PANTHER and AVENGERS INFINITY WAR, Disney went to the well again with a proven Pixar property and finally gave fans the sequel they’ve been asking for with INCREDIBLES 2 (click the link to read our review).  Of all the Pixar films, THE INCREDIBLES was the one that I always felt the most people put at the top of their favorites list and after 14 years, we finally get a sequel.  As it turns out, the sequel is great and fans came out in droves to see the Incredible family back in action, leading to a massive $175 million haul at the weekend box office.  Since INCREDIBLES 2 appeals to just about every type of audience, counter-marketing was tricky and the other new movies found that out the hard way.  The comedy TAG couldn’t crack $15 million and the action-drama SUPERFLY couldn’t find an audience with just over $5 million.

Next week should be an interesting showdown.  JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM will challenge INCREDIBLES 2 for the top spot and the bad news for Jurassic World is that I don’t see INCREDIBLES 2 losing too much of its audience.  It’s an extremely well reviewed and well received kids movie, which usually translates to a long run at the box office.  The problem facing JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM is that the buzz is lukewarm and early tracking put it at around $150 million (which I think is high).  I think Fallen Kingdom will still end up in the top spot, but I also think INCREDIBLES 2 will make it very close.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Incredibles 2 $175.3m

2. Ocean’s 8 $20.5m

3. Tag $13.7m

4. Deadpool 2 $8.8m

5. Solo: A Star Wars Story $7.9m

6. Hereditary $6.5m

7. Superfly $5.6m

8. Avengers: Infinity War $5.4m

9. Adrift $2.3m

10. Book Club $2.1m
