Weekend box office: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom beats out Incredibles 2

The first JURASSIC WORLD opened with over $208 million at the weekend box office, so it will be interesting to see how pundits and studio executives react to the sequel coming in about $60 million less with around $145 million.  Perhaps it’s just the difference between reviving a franchise and continuing with the story, but after SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY got completely thrashed for “only” opening with $100 million, I’m sure JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM (click the link to read our review) will get some negative backlash.  But the same challenges that hit Solo are hitting Fallen Kingdom, this time the competition comes in the form of animated superheroes.  INCREDIBLES 2 has another impressive weekend, bringing in around $85 million and clearly taking away some of Fallen Kingdom’s audience.  Studios were smart to avoid challenging giant dinosaurs and animated heroes and nothing else opened this weekend.

Next week sees the release of SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO and the very unusual looking UNCLE DREW.  SICARIO was a nice surprise when it came out but the question remains whether or not the sequel can capture the original’s success, especially without star Emily Blunt.  As for UNCLE DREW, I’m not even sure what to think.  I can’t stand Kyrie Irving the basketball player so I can’t imagine I’ll be able to tolerate him as an actor.  And the trailers aren’t doing the film any favors since it’s still hard to tell what it’s about.  My guess is that JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM and INCREDIBLES 2 will hold on to the top two spots with SICARIO and UNCLE DREW finishing third and fourth respectively.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom $145.6m

2. Incredibles 2 $84m

3. Ocean’s 8 $11.5m

4. Tag $8.1m

5. Deadpool 2 $5.5m

6. Solo: A Star Wars Story $5.2m

7. Hereditary $3.5m

8. Superfly $3m

9. Avengers: Infinity War $2.7m

10. Won’t You Be My Neighbor $1.5m
